What worked for me / assumes that your new phone has your old phone number (i.e. that you’ve moved your sim to your new device):

  • Open WhatsApp on the new phone

  • If you’d previously linked it as a new device, click in the top right & select Log Out.

  • When you open WhatsApp again, after selecting language and agreeing to T&Cs, you see the Add Linked Device Screen / QR code scanner… Don’t be tempted by that.

  • Click the vertical elipses (â‹®) in the top right then select **Register new account** (you’re not registering a new account; your moving your existing account to a new device - it’s badly worded).

  • Enter your phone number - because your new device has the same phone number as your account, it’ll see that you’re an existing user and so will now connect to your old account.

  • The rest of the steps make sense - allowing the app access to various resources, restoring your chats & media from backups, etc.

If you still have your old phone, you’ll have been logged out as it’s no longer your primary device… you may now want to add that as a linked device…
